It is true that Google doesn’t have any office or physical existence in Pakistan, despite the fact it earns almost US $500 million revenue every year from the country — mainly through advertising.
Badar Khushnood, country consultant for Google — also known as the face of Google in Pakistan has stated clearly on many occasions that Google isn’t going to open its regional offices in Pakistan any time soon. Google also ignored the orders of Peshawar High Court to establish regional office in the Blasphemous Content case.
Is it legal for Google to operate in Pakistan without any office, avoiding legal obligations & taxes? well, we are going to find the answer very soon.
A petition has been filled with the Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan against Google, challenging its operations in Pakistan. The applicant Dr. Muzafar Kamil took the stance that Google is operating in Pakistan for the last ten years without any physical presence, the company is not registered in Pakistan and it doesn’t pay any taxes or obey the rules and regulations.
IPO Pakistan has registered the case and summoned the officials of PTA, MoIT and SECP to discuss the matter and take necessary actions. Google’s consultant for Pakistan, Badar Khushnood was not available for comments.
